Precision changes the question
For precision components the target is not simply maximum hardness. The useful layer must be compatible with dimensional tolerance, surface finish, edge geometry and the required friction or fatigue behaviour.
Geometry matters
Holes, cavities, narrow gaps, shielding and electrical contact conditions can change local plasma exposure. Cross-sections and hardness traces should therefore be planned around the critical geometry rather than only on convenient flat coupons.
Validation
Layer thickness, compound-layer condition, diffusion-zone hardness, dimensional change and tribological response should be linked to the drawing and service requirement. Hardness alone is not a complete acceptance criterion.
